After Aryabhata, the first Indian satellite, was launched, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi released a commemorative stamp in Pondicherry. Both events were kept secret until publicized later. This stamp issue was unique because it was announced after its release, unlike other stamps which were previewed in newspapers and on television. Gandhi visited Pondicherry, and the first day postmark issued there became 'special place' postmark as Pondicherry did not have a philatelic bureau at the time.

Space Mail from Salyut 7 Orbital Station - 3 April 1984
On April 3, 1984, the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft was launched to the Salyut 7 space station, carrying Soviet cosmonauts Yuri Malyshev, Gennadi Strekalov, and Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma. This mission was historic as Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian in space.
The crew conducted various scientific and medical experiments, including Earth observations, space medicine studies, and material science research. During the mission, Sharma famously described India from space as "Sare Jahan Se Achha" in response to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's question. After spending nearly 8 days aboard Salyut 7, the crew safely returned to Earth, marking a significant milestone in India's space exploration journey.
The Postal stationery of the USSR, issued and postmarked the 50th Anniversary of the death of Yuri Gagarin was cancelled a day after the docking of Soyuz T-11 to the orbital station Salyut 7, on 5 April 1984, with the official postmarks of India and USSR issued to the mission and the octagonal board cancel of Salyut 7 and signed by the cosmonauts present.
